THE CHALLENGE

Defence administers one of the largest Graduate Programs across the Australian Public Service. Synergy Group was engaged to build and execute the 2024 Defence Graduate Program campaign for the Department of Defence.

2022 saw a significant decrease (41%) in applications across all Graduate and Entry Level Programs, which proved consistent with trends across all Commonwealth agencies. Synergy Group conducted in-depth behavioural studies, which found that the primary barrier was attracting the right kind of candidates, and securing healthy retention levels.

OUR APPROACH

The aim of the campaign is to attract candidates that align with Defence's core values, removing potential barriers and preconceptions on their eligibility, and connect them with a suitable position as an APS graduate in the Defence Graduate Program. The campaign also aims to firmly position the Defence Graduate program as a civilian/APS role.

The fingerprint concept offers potential applicants the opportunity to see themselves as a Defence Graduate, by speaking to their unique experiences, values and attributes, rather than tertiary education background. Graduates want to know that their stories are unique, recognised, and valued - just like their contribution to Defence
